Sonia Mendez-Castro, Partner, Skyer Law

Sonia’s interest in special education law grew naturally from her early work in civil rights. While in college, she collaborated with New York City policymakers to address the challenges faced by non–English-proficient students who were unable to access educational services. She continued to build her advocacy experience by volunteering with organizations supporting teens experiencing social isolation due to HIV status, pregnancy, or gender identity.

Sonia earned her J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law in 1993 and began her career at Advocates for Children, the leading organization serving students from low-income backgrounds who face discrimination or difficulty in school. As part of a team of attorneys and advocates, she fought to secure appropriate educational services for students with disabilities who might otherwise go unrepresented. During her tenure, Sonia rose to the position of Supervising Attorney, training law students and new attorneys, testifying at public hearings, presenting workshops for community organizations, and coordinating a national initiative—Mobilization for Equity and Excellence in Education.

After starting her family, Sonia transitioned into private practice, representing special education clients and consulting on appeals to higher courts. In 2002 Sonia joined SkyerLaw, becoming partner in 2019. As one of our most seasoned attorneys, Sonia brings leadership and mentorship to our firm, all while continuing to represent clients at impartial hearings and appeals.

Sonia lives on Long Island with her husband and three daughters.
