Public Benefits & Life Planning

Planning for Life Beyond School

For many families, the biggest question is not only “What is the right school for my child?” — it’s “What happens after school ends?”

Our Public Benefits & Life Planning division helps families plan for the future with guidance around public benefits, long-term support systems, and life planning for children and young adults with developmental disabilities.

Why Early Planning Matters

Many families are surprised to learn that support services may be available long before adulthood — in some cases, beginning in early childhood.

The systems involved can be complicated, slow-moving, and difficult to navigate alone. Establishing eligibility early can create access to important services, funding, and long-term opportunities later in life.

Without proper planning, families often face what is commonly called the “transition cliff” — the abrupt end of school-based services at age 21 or 22.

Starting early helps create a stronger foundation for the future.

What Is OPWDD?

OPWDD (Office for People With Developmental Disabilities) is a New York State public benefits program for children and adults with qualifying developmental disabilities.

OPWDD is separate from your child’s school district or educational program. Receiving OPWDD services does not impact your right to pursue educational advocacy or tuition reimbursement.

Once eligibility is established, OPWDD can provide access to a wide range of services and supports that may continue throughout a person’s lifetime.

How We Help

Led by Cayle White, our Public Benefits & Life Planning division works closely with families to:

  • Assess potential eligibility for OPWDD and related benefits
  • Review evaluations and supporting documentation
  • Organize and prepare applications
  • Navigate Medicaid Waiver and Self-Direction systems
  • Develop long-term planning strategies for adulthood
  • Help families understand available services and next steps

Our role is to help make an overwhelming process more understandable, strategic, and manageable.
